When you have programmed your site, uploaded all the files and got everything in place, you click 'Launch' and your site goes live. But later comes the tricky part. You have to make your website popular..you gotta make the world know that there is something you've done. And the best way to let the globe know is by
making you site visible on the search engines.
SEO is 'search engine optimization'. It is basically the process of affecting the visibility of a website in a search engines natural results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users.
There a lot of ways in which SEO is done. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic. Submitting webpages/websites to search engines is also important. ie. You wanna make google know that you have a site on the web!

- Improving your sites pagerank by trying to increase backlinks to your site.
- Try to get indexed pages for your site on YAHOO.
- Try to get indexed pages for your site on BING.
- Try getting your site listed in DMOZ and the Yahoo directory.
- Give alts and titles to images on your website which will improve visibility on image searches.
